AB350 gives workers a chance to prove their worth- San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco, CA
With AB350, authored by Assemblyman Jose Solorio, D-Santa Ana, the Legislature has the opportunity to begin reforming the troubled contracted property services industry. It is an industry characterized by hyper-competition where contracts turn on razor-thin margins of a few hundred dollars. It is a race to the bottom: Contracts too often turn not on the promise of better services but on creating poverty-wage jobs. AB350 would offer hardworking security officers and cafeteria workers a modicum of stability, giving them 60 days after a building contract changes hands to prove themselves to their new employer or find a new job.
Calsaga still opposes this, right? I like the spin..."Helps workers prove themselves or find a new job".
What it doesn't mention is that the old service was dumped for a reason...Bad management, bad employees or both. Forcing the new company to take on problem employees not only doesn't solve the problem, it now saddles the company with UI and other obligations, rather than the company that was the problem in the first place.

Greg: Thanks for commenting on the blog. Yes, CALSAGA is still very much opposed to the bill, for many of the issues you mentioned. The bill made it out of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday and now heads to the Senate Floor for a vote. Assuming it passes (every indication is that it will), the bill will head to the Governor for a signature or veto.
