Bank security guard recognizes robber, takes him into custody- OregonLive, Portland, OR

A bank security guard took a suspect into custody on Saturday after recognizing him as the man who had robbed a Key Bank branch in Southeast Portland three times. 

Donation to fund security guards, cleanup in downtown Concord- Silicon Valley Mercury News, Concord, CA

Private security guards will once again patrol the streets and sidewalks of downtown, thanks to a grant from the charitable foundation run by the CEO of Brenden Theatres. Tuesday night the City Council accepted a grant of $124,000 from the Brenden-Mann Foundation to provide security and cleanup services downtown.

Wanted man with stolen gun arrested on Main Beach in Santa Cruz- Santa Cruz Sentinel, Santa Cruz, CA

 Police arrested a 25-year-old wanted man early this morning on Main Beach after he was spotted with a semiautomatic handgun under a lifeguard tower, Santa Cruz police reported. About 4:10 a.m. on Main Beach, private security guards told police that a man was walking with a handgun, said Santa Cruz police spokesman Zach Friend. Police arrived and found James Gray, of Salinas, lying under a lifeguard tower with a handgun next to him, Friend said.

State Fair Enhances Security Following 2010 Heist- Fox40, Sacramento, CA

The California State Fair employs about 200 police officers, plus a security force of 150 guards.  On any given day at the fair, there are more officers per capita than you would find in many cities.

There are more private security personnel in the world than there are police officers, according to the Small Arms Survey, an annual yearbook of issues related to armed conflict by researchers at the Graduate Institute of Geneva- a statistic that indicates that tehre may be a global demand for more security than states can provide.

Assembly Bill 350 passes Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee

On Wednesday, June 29, Assembly Bill 350 by Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Santa Ana) passed the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee 5-1.  AB 350 now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee where it is expected to pass before heading to the Senate Floor for a vote.

CALSAGA President Roy Rahn was joined by the California Chamber of Commerce and other industry associations in testifying in opposition to the bill.  To read why CALSAGA is opposed to AB 350, you can read our opposition letter by clicking here. 

Amongst the various arguments in opposition, there was an interesting discussion pertinent to our industry on the issue of background screening and whether or not the bill precludes an employer’s right to conduct a background check to an employee they are absorbing from the prior contractor.  Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), and other members of the committee, requested that Assemblyman Solorio consider amending the bill to clarify that employers have the right to conduct background checks.
