Two male suspects smashed the window of the store and began grabbing items from display cases while a female suspect waited in a car, police said. As the two men fled the store, a security guard ordered them to halt at gunpoint. Instead one of the men began firing at the guard, who returned fire, striking the suspect in the head, police said. He was declared dead at the scene. The two others fled on foot and were arrested within minutes, police said.

A private security guard fatally shot a suspect carrying out a smash-and-grab burglary at a San Diego County Apple store early Monday, a common tactic in which thieves break the windows and grab laptops, iPads, iPhones and other hot-ticket items and run, police said. Chula Vista Police Chief David Bejarano said the man and two others drove to the store just before 7 a.m. A woman stayed in the car while the two men smashed the store's window and grabbed items when the guard confronted them, he said.
