The jury could not reach a verdict in the second-degree murder case against former security guard Jeremy Holmes. Judge Randall Wyatt individually polled the jury on the fifth day of trial after nearly six hours of deliberation. All of the 12 members agreed the jury was definitely divided, and no more discussion could help them reach a consensus on whether the man who shot Adam Villegas committed second-degree murder.

Three security guards were stabbed outside a Farmingville bar early Sunday after an altercation following a patron's refusal to pay a $5 cover charge, Suffolk County police said. After the man refused to pay the fee, he and five friends caused a disturbance outside Las Tejas bar on Portion Road at 2:30 a.m., police said. Security guards approached the group, and three of the guards were stabbed, police said.

Governor Schwarzenegger appoints new Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs

On Tuesday, August 11, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Brian Stiger as the new Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA).  Stiger replaces former Director Carrie Lopez who resigned earlier this year. 

Prior to his appointment as Director of DCA, Stiger spent two years as the executive officer for the Board of Chiropractic Examiners where he successfully reformed the agency’s enforcement program by decreasing complaint processing time and reducing the backlog of consumer complaints.  From 2004 to 2007, Stiger served as Chief of the Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation.  Collectively, Stiger brings roughly 15 years of experience with various state agencies improving overall consumer protection. 

Governor Schwarzenegger issued a statement about the new appointment:

“Brian’s experience improving and streamlining many statewide consumer protection programs makes him the perfect person to lead this important department at this time,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “The health and safety of Californians is my top priority and Brian shares this strong commitment. He will lead my Administration’s efforts to review all consumer protection practices at the department and enact any needed reforms to ensure the people of this state are protected against bad actors.”

The appointment of a new Director is critical and related to the eventual appointment of a new Chief of the Bureau of Security & Investigative Services.  As many of you know, that position has remained vacant since the retirement of former Chief Paul Johnson and we knew that the Director position needed to be filled first before a BSIS Chief replacement was announced.

Apartment Hires Armed Guards After Gunfire- 2 Men Shot At Sunridge Apartments In Last 7 Months-WNEM CBS News, Flint Township, MI 

After the second deadly shooting in less than a year, a Mid-Michigan apartment complex is increasing security. The Sunridge Apartments in Flint Township have hired armed security guards to man the front gate and patrol the complex.
