New BSIS Deputy Chief Connie Trujillo added to March 18 seminar

CALSAGA is thrilled to announce that new BSIS Deputy Chief Connie Trujillo has been added to the agenda as part of our upcoming seminar, “Behind the Scenes:  An In-Depth Look at the Process of California Legislation”.  The seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 at the Pasadena Hilton from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Do you ever wonder how a bill really becomes law?  This seminar, lead by Association Manager Jeff Flint and CALSAGA lobbyist Kelly Jensen, will illustrate how the legislative process works, how CALSAGA represents you in the Capitol and how your involvement can help strengthen the voice of our Association and industry with the Legislature. 

As mentioned above, Deputy Chief Connie Trujillo will round out the seminar and discuss the various ways the State budget deficit impacts BSIS – from funding for outreach and enforcement agents to hindering their legislative agenda to bring greater professionalism to the industry.  BSIS Outreach Coordinator Rolando Taeza will also be on hand to field any questions you might have.

Where's Our Jack Webb?

On April 10th, Warner Brothers Pictures will release Observe and Report, a comedy about a mall security guard who attempts to catch an elusive flasher. The lead is played by Seth Rogen,and according to what I have read about the film , Rogen's character is described as  "bi-polar". Observe and Report follows on the heels of Mall Cop, the Kevin James film released in January.

The genre of the security guard film has its roots in the Keystone Cops.These silent film shorts were about the misadventures of a bumbling group of incompetent police officers and featured Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle in the starring role. More recent examples of this kind include Armed and Dangerous; A 1986 release with the late John Candy, and 2003's National Security with Martin Lawrence. These are what may be the more "positive" portrayals of security officers in film. The characters, though clumsy and inept, are good-hearted schlubs who manage to capture the bad guys by film's end. On the other hand, dramatic portrayals of security officers have fared much worse. The officers are depicted either as hapless victims who are taken out in the first act with a quick chop to the back of the neck. Or, they turn up as the sweat-drenched-stalkers-in-uniform who terrorize women in parking garages. What our industry needs in Hollywood is our own Jack Webb.

Anyone who grew up in the 1960s and 70s can recall the many television programs of the Jack Webb franchise; Dragnet, Adam-12, Emergency, O'Hara, United States Treasury, and Project Blue Book. In each television program he produced, Webb's passion was for authenticity.He had an affinity for public safety and the military. His plot lines were based on true stories, and he always strove to maintain the dignity of the people and organizations portrayed on his programs. I have to believe there are producers in Hollywood who would do right by us. The question is who will be the first to step forward and tell our story?
