2008 CALSAGA Annual conference just one week away

Our conference is designed with you and your company in mind.  From the meal period issue to BSIS training compliance, our goal is to provide answers and solutions to the most important issues facing security companies. 

Speaking of BSIS, on the first day of the conference, CALSAGA is thrilled to have BSIS Chief Paul Johnson address attendees.  Johnson will brief the group on BSIS outreach and enforcement efforts.  Additionally, BSIS Outreach Coordinator Rolando Taeza will be on hand in the exhibiting area to answer questions.  This has been a huge success over the years and we are pleased that BSIS has agreed to staff a booth again.

New Regulations on Private Patrols is Not the Solution

In regard to last year's private patrol chase, I do not believe that increased regulation on private patrol companies is the solution to prevent future incidents of this kind.

I have owned and operated a private patrol in Southern California for nearly a quarter century , and I have yet to see where heavy handed municipal regulations have ever stopped a patrol operator or employee from exercising poor judgment, or acting out in a malevolent manner. Unfortunately these things will happen in our industry just as they do in every other occupational environment.

From the 1970s through 2000, the Los Angeles Police Commission required private street patrol operators to comply with a laundry list of regulations that restricted nearly every aspect of street patrol operations from the color of the officer's uniforms,(slate grey), to the caliber and ammunition  of firearms carried on duty. The City even required all street patrol officers to wear the same coin-sized badge. The only thing any these regulations ever accomplished was more work for management.

Let society punish those who break the law, and not those who follow it.

Two teens were charged after one allegedly pulled a knife on mall security and the other tried to steal some jeans.  About 3 p.m. yesterday, security spotted a male teen trying to steal some jeans from a store in West Edmonton Mall.

Security guard robbed at gunpoint - KPTV, Portland

A security guard was robbed from behind at gunpoint outside an industrial plant in Longview early Sunday morning, police said.  Police said the robber surprised the security guard outside of Northwest Hardwoods in Longview along Industrial Way at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Security guard attacked, beaten with crowbar - WLKY, Kentucky

A shoplifting attempt turned violent when a security guard was attacked by three people and later beaten with a crowbar.

Security guard foils robbery try - News Record, North Carolina

It looked like a local convenience store would be robbed Tuesday night for the third time in 10 days.  This time, however, an armed security guard foiled a robbery attempt at the C&C Market at 2820 Lawndale Drive.

The owner of a local private police force is facing charges for statutory rape.  44-year-old Joseph Guarascio faces five charges including taking indecent liberties with a child and statutory rape.

The security guard who gave mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson an after-hours tour of the mayor and city council office area has been reassigned.

Police say woman threatened store guard - The Eagle Tribune, New Hampshire

Aja Silvio, 30, of 58 Harrison St., was arrested just after noon at the Route 125 store, and charged with shoplifting and assault criminal threatening, according to Deputy Chief Kathleen Jones. She was released on $5,000 personal recognizance and is due in Plaistow District Court on Jan. 5.
