BSIS schedules first SB 666 Advisory Committee meeting

As you know, BSIS announced a few weeks ago that they had selected members to the SB 666 Advisory Committee.  CALSAGA received notice last week confirming that the committee had already set its first meeting on Wednesday, April 9 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Department of Consumers Affairs:

3rd Floor Sacramento Room
Sacramento, CA 95834

The meeting is open to the public.  To download an agenda of the meeting, click here.  While CALSAGA is unable to participate on the committee, staff will be on hand to listen in and will report back any new developments.

The Sandpiper Beacon security guard accused of sexually assaulting a teenage spring breaker last week was exempt from a state law requiring at least a week’s training and a nationwide criminal history check.  State officials said Shawn Wuertley did not have a Florida security license and would not have qualified for one because of his prison record. But, because he worked for the hotel and not a security company, a license was not necessary.

Assembly Business & Professions Committee hears SB 1209

On Monday, March 24, CALSAGA sponsored legislation, Senate Bill 1209 by Senator Abel Maldonado (R - Santa Maria) made it out of its first committee hearing on a 6-0 vote.  Although the bill still has a long way to go, we are obviously pleased that it cleared its first hurdle.

CALSAGA Legislative Chair, Randy Davis from AlliedBarton Security Services represented the association and provided brief testimony on the need for the bill. 

In the event of a state of emergency declaration by the Governor, SB 1209 would grant authority to the Bureau of Security & Investigative Services to pull security officers from neighboring states on the condition that at the very minimum, those officers have been properly background checked and have completed some form of security officer training.

CALSAGA will continue to work with all interested parties and we will keep you updated on any new developments as the bill moves forward.

Seattle police say a security guard was stabbed today outside a federal office by a man who was angry it was not open.  Police say at about 9 a.m., a man knocked on the door of the Social Security office (at 675 S. Lane St.) wanting to be let in. Police say the security guard opened the door and was stabbed in the head and arm.

NASCO Testifies Regarding FBI Background Check Legislation

The National Association of Security Companies (NASCO) sent an email communication yesterday regarding H.R. 2703, which would amend existing law to create a third party clearing house to better facilitate access to FBI Criminal History Records Information (CHRI) checks for security guards in every state.

Southern California Vice President Roy Rahn speaks at ASIS Conference

On Tuesday, March 11, CALSAGA Vice President Roy Rahn addressed attendees at the Los Angeles Chapter of American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) 2008 Annual Conference.  The two day conference, held at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, brought together security industry leaders from Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange.

Rahn did an extraordinary job of updating attendees on the efforts of CALSAGA over the last few years – from our legislative work in Sacramento to our overall goal of professionalizing the security industry through increased education and awareness. 

CALSAGA also sponsored an exhibiting booth at the conference and Deputy Association Manager William Hodges was on hand to recruit new members, answer security-related questions and distribute out CALSAGA material.  We are pleased to report that we added a new PPO member and have leads on a few other potential PPO members. 

As you know, CALSAGA is in the beginning stages of rolling out our large marketing effort this year, and being more visible at conferences like the one mentioned above is an important component of our overall marketing campaign as we move forward.
